    Plaquenil before surgery

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

The 1-2 months is correct. It’s about 45 days before it starts to go out of your system. Remember it is cumulative, and took time to build up for an effect when you started taking it. It has an enormous half life. That’s why I laugh when some people’s surgeons tell them stop taking it 2 weeks before surgery. It does nothing. Question. I currently take Celebrex and Plaquenil for RA and am having surgery soon on my foot. Dr. told me to be off my meds. one week prior to surgery, but didn’t say how long afterward. Although the rate of complications occurring within 30 days of surgery was high, and 52% of the 63 83% complications were septic, there was no correlation with therapy. Specifically, infliximab treatment within 8 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery did not increase the risk of early postoperative infections in these CD patients.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.

I was off plaquenil for a month because of surgery. I felt awful after about a week off. It took another month after beginning it again to start feeling better. I think being off the plaquenil hindered my recovery. I had cubital tunnel syndrome surgery in my right arm. I ended up in therapy before I finally started healing. I was due to have gynae surgery tomorrow it may involve a small rectal resection alsobut the gynae nurse called me last Wed and told me to stop Plaquenil and postponed surgery for a week on the surgeon's orders. I had a similar but less invasive surgery last Sept and the gynae surgeon wrote to Rheuma to ask if I needed to stop Plaquenil. Three hundred and eighty-eight patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgeries were randomized to either continue or to stop MTX therapy for 2 weeks before surgery and resume 2 weeks postoperatively. The patients were followed for up to 1 year. Patients who continued their MTX had an infection rate of 2%.
