My doctors -- rheum, ophtho, derm, PCP -- ALL assure me it's "extremely rare" to develop eye problems on Plaquenil, but I can't rationalize why an annual eye exam would be mandatory for anyone on Plaquenil if it was truly that rare. No one knows your vision like you do, so just be mindful of your vision moving forward. Your eye care provider can examine the macula and detect subtle changes before you begin to notice any symptoms of problems. As a result, all patients taking plaquenil should have an examination approximately every six months. The macula should be examined through a dilated pupil. The incidence of Plaquenil related macular problems increases. Plaquenil is an extremely safe medication but retinal and corneal side effects are possible. Unfortunately, the retinal side effects are largely irreversible and can lead to vision loss. So, it is critical to detect early retinal toxicity in the hopes of limiting the extent of visual loss.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking hydroxychloroquine: Incidence not known Some side effects of hydroxychloroquine may occur that usually do not need medical attention. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Yes I have rentina toxicity and only took Plaquenil for a little over a year. I have bullseye vision and night vision problems too. There is nothing that can be done to fix the damage. I was getting regular check ups also. I was told it was reversible if I had eye problems after you stopped taking it. That is not true ! Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil. The drug can be very effective in its treatment of RA and Lupus and the likelihood of serious vision problems is small and can potentially be avoided with the correct dosing and monitoring of the eyes. Other drugs in the treatment for RA or Lupus may have more frequent or serious side effects then. Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness.
