    Plaquenil and light sensitivity

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take hydroxychloroquine with all of your drugs and health problems.

I took Plaquenil for Sjogren's Syndrome. It got so I couldn't walk up a curb without help before I switched to oral Methotrexate. My peripheral neuropathy actually went away too, and my rheumy thinks it was a rare, toxic side-effect of the Plaquenil. Photosensitivity is a skin reaction i.e. rash that occurs after exposure to ultraviolet UV radiation from the sun or an artificial light source. Photosensitivity can be caused by various agents, including drugs, perfume, cosmetics, and even the sunscreen that is meant to protect your skin. If you are fair-skinned and have light eyes and light hair, you should be even more careful when exposed to UV rays, because people with those features are more sensitive to the sun and artificial.

For all uses of hydroxychloroquine: WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

This wasn’t due to light sensitivity in my case but light did make it worse. I also had anaphylaxis triggered by light sensitivity when taking a different disease modifier called Sulfasalazine. I have Sjögren’s rather than Lupus. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. While today it is used to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, it was originally used as an anti-malaria drug. OK apparently Plaq makes you a bit more sun sensitive. This means you are more likely to burn or develop rashes. I was on this drug for 7 years and my doctor did not warn me about sun sensitivity even though I live in a country where we have a strong summer heat and light and have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world per head of population.
