Hello, I am 33 years old and the breast cancer survivor. I have been taking Tamoxifen for almost 1 1/2 years. In October and November I missed my periods and when I went to see my doc the blood test showed that I have very, very high estrogen level in the blood (almost 1000). Also, the pelvis Ultrasound showed that I have lots of big (5-6 cm) cysts with walls on both ovaries. My ovaries were clean back in July when I did the CT scan. My obgyn said that it's very weird and confusing to have high estrogen, no periods and the cysts at the same time. I feel fine with the exception of some cramps in my pelvis once in a while. Ovarian cysts are not ovarian cancer (A diagnosis of ovarian cancer would require a biopsy). buy retin-a tretinoin cream I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January when I was 50. Baseline tests revealed I had a small (2cm) ovarian cyst on each ovary- considered not a problem. When I was 20 I had 2 chocolate cysts the size of “small oranges” removed from my ovaries. I was put on 2 nine month durations of Provera to induce ‘pseudo-pregnancies’. For 4 hours the doctor removed microscopic bits of endometrial tissue, removed adhesions, and put my organs back into place. He followed that up with daily “tubal flushes” for a week to keep my fallopian tubes open. I knew I’d be better off keeping myself intact and looked for alternatives. Now I have the breast cancer diagnosis and I had a lumpectomy and radiation. I was perimenapausal at this point, but the Tamoxifen stopped what little spotting I had. I had a transvaginal ultrasound and it showed that my left cyst and increased from 2cm to 4.5 cm, but described as “simple”. After 2 miscarriages it was determined that I had an ‘inadequate luteal phase’. Ten years ago I started having very heavy periods, very frequently (10 days long every 21 days). I asked him about an endometrial ablation and he referred me to another specialist. I still had minor spotting at the time of my periods… My oncologist ordered a blood test and it showed my estradiol levels as high (386). In 1977 I got pregnant and was one of the first users of progesterone suppositories. I should mention that I had genetic testing and I came up negative for the BRCA1 and 2 genes. So this appears not to be cancer, but just a simple cyst that is causing me discomfort. The doctors would like to reduce my estrogen level because of the breast cancer. Its use produces a high response rate in both pre- and post-menopausal patients (2,3). I recently had an ovarian cyst develop and rupture and was wondering if it could be related to Tamoxifen. I had BC in July and started on Tamoxifen Oct 16 2007 after concluding radiation. and I've never have a cyst (to my knowledge) prior to this event. My doctors OBGYN and Medical Oncologist both say Tamoxifen does not cause cysts but I have read many articles saying there is a high percentage and correlation of ovarian cysts in premenpausal women. It appears to be recent studies in the last few years. Are my doctors just not keeping up with readings or are these journals on the internet not accurate? I am trying to decide whether I should stop taking Tamoxifen or not. And if have seen good studies on the topic could you tell me where I can get that data to share with my doctors?
